Beaches & Relaxation
Nungwi Beach
Known for its turquoise water, stunning sunsets, and buzzing atmosphere. Ideal for swimming and dhow cruises.
Kendwa Beach
A nearby gem with wide, sandy shores that stay swimmable even during low tide. Great for full moon parties.
Paje Beach
Perfect for laid-back vibes and budget-friendly bungalows. The consistent winds also make it a kitesurfing hotspot.
Michamvi & Bwejuu
More secluded and peaceful beaches, ideal for couples or solo travelers seeking quiet.

Water Activities
Snorkeling at Mnemba Atoll
One of the best snorkeling spots in East Africa. Crystal-clear waters, colorful fish, and sometimes even dolphins.
Scuba Diving
Explore coral reefs, shipwrecks, and deep walls. Popular dive centers are based in Nungwi and Kendwa.
Nakupenda Sandbank Trip
A dreamy half-day trip to a sandbank that disappears at high tide. Great for swimming, sunbathing, and seafood lunches.
Sunset Dhow Cruise
Sail along the coast in a traditional dhow boat while enjoying the sunset with music and drinks.

Adventure & Sports
Kitesurfing in Paje
Zanzibar is one of Africa’s top kitesurfing destinations. Paje offers beginner lessons and gear rentals.
Paddleboarding & Kayaking
Available at several resorts along the east coast. Best done early in the morning when the sea is calm.
Dolphin Tour in Kizimkazi
A popular activity — but be sure to book with an ethical operator to avoid harming wildlife.
Culture & History
Stone Town Walking Tour
A UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with Arab, Swahili, and European influences. Don’t miss the Old Fort and House of Wonders.

Experience a bustling local market filled with fresh produce, spices, and handmade crafts.
Jozani Forest
Home to the rare Red Colobus monkeys. You can also explore mangrove trails and learn about conservation.
Festivals & Events
Sauti za Busara (February)
Zanzibar’s iconic music festival celebrating African music and culture. Held annually in Stone Town, this festival showcases artists from all over the African continent. Check this year’s dates and lineup on the festival’s website.
The vibes here are just incredible, and it’s an amazing place to discover new artists. I remember being swept away by Msaki when I first saw her perform at Sauti.
Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF)
One of East Africa’s largest cultural events, showcasing films, art, and live performances, and an awesome way to learn more about African culture. Check out this year’s dates and programme on the festival’s website.
Food & Drink
Forodhani Gardens Night Market
Street food heaven in Stone Town. Try Zanzibar pizza, grilled seafood, and sugarcane juice.

Take a hands-on class to learn traditional dishes like pilau (my personal favorite), samaki wa kupaka, and chapati.
